Dear Ms. Christine Darrah,
My name is Leah Rea and I am currently undertaking a study abroad year at Coe College, Iowa on a Business scholarship. I will enter my final year of reading Law (LLB Honours) at Queen’s University Belfast in September 2016. I am writing to you to state my sincere interest in applying for the Justice Committee summer internship programme 2015.
The Justice Committee within the Department of Justice at Stormont is a committee I have always regarded highly and with great interest due to the vital service it provides in Northern Ireland and the historical context in which it was established through devolution in 2010. I believe strongly that Stormont should retain the powers of policing and justice for Northern Ireland, and would feel privileged to have the opportunity to work for such an important, iconic Committee. As a conscientious, determined student with an avid awareness of law and politics both locally and nationally, I could readily contribute to the Committee as an intern.
I understand the key role of the Committee is one of scrutiny, policy and legislation development and consultation. The most recent bill to be referred to the Committee, the Justice Bill 2014, aims to amend the law on criminal proceedings and court jurisdiction. As evidenced by my CV, I have experience working in law firms specialising in criminal law and am aware of the legal issues pertaining to criminal justice procedure at representation level. Considering the internships I undertook in Belfast, London and Iowa, I understand the importance of jurisdictional clarity and the need for reform in Northern Ireland. I could aid in researching for a valid solution to these issues and provide a unique perspective through not only my experiences as a law student and intern in the UK, but also my experience in America.
Would it be possible to request an interview to discuss my application and interest further? I can be contacted via email or telephone: my email address is [email protected] and mobile number is 07841413905.
Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to speaking with you.
Yours sincerely,
Leah Rea
